We don’t do enough industrial construction updates here. That’s mostly because industrial facilities are notoriously difficult to photograph. Unless you have a helicopter. Which our friend Joe Zekas over at YoChicago! sometimes does. And so he sent us the photograph above showing the work being done in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, just south of Blue Island Avenue.
What used to be an ordinary-looking container transfer facility is becoming a massive freezer warehouse with the vanilla name “Chicago III” at 2357 South Wood Street. Three rooms will have a combined capacity of 32,000 pallets that can be blast-frozen, USDA-inspected, or simply stored in what is the third massive Chicago facility for New Jersey’s Preferred Freezer Services.
Ground broke this past March, and the facility is expected to come online in 2017. When it does, the building will be 58-feet tall, and cover 227,000 square feet. The architect is Grant Brandenburg at Ware Malcomb.
For more information, check out the press release from the groundbreaking below. Or for something more interesting, check out the construction cam. (After it loads, click on the “Camera 1” button next to the other “Camera 1” button.) Based on what it’s shown us so far, there are going to be some epic views of the Chicago skyline if PFS allows its employees to have rooftop barbecues. Now if there was only some place they could find some meat to grill…
