If your travels take you through Terminal 3 at O’Hare airport, then change is in the air.
The City of Chicago has issued the paperwork to start work on the foundations for the latest T3 expansion. The project will add five new gates to the mixed domestic and international terminal, at a total cost of $70 million.
FOUNDATIONS ONLY FOR THIS PERMIT APPLICATION. FUTURE AMERICAN AIRLINES NEW 5 GATE ADDITION, APPROX 49540 SQ. FT. AT STINGER L (2 STORY BUILDING), ADJACENT TO TERMINAL 3 AT O’HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.CDA PROJECT NUMBER: TH1422.16-01
If the notion of construction dust flying at O’Hare brings a tear to your eye, it could be because the city completed $26 million in renovations on Terminal 5 just two years ago. But that’s the international terminal. This is the first time in a generation that new domestic gates have been added at O’Hare.
While O’Hare also has big plans for adding bigger gates that can handle massive A380-sized aircraft, the plan at Terminal 3 is the opposite: Smaller gates for smaller planes that will fly shorter distances.
