When you hear about new large-scale residential developments in the city off Chicago, usually it’s a new tower downtown, or a strip of rowhouses in a hipster enclave. But the newest multi-family opportunity in town is right in the heart of Chciago. And by “heart of Chicago” we mean the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, a block west of the Heart of Italy neighborhood, north of an industrial area in the 2500 block of South Blue Island Avenue.
Why plonk 34 brand new townhouses there? Well, don’t think off it as proximally Sanitary Canal. Think of it as metro Pilsen. Or Illinois Medical District-adjacent. or Bridgeport West.
Vari Architects of Goose Island at the design desk on this one. Currently the space is a vacant lot, but there is one web site on the internet that claims this was formerly the home of Wozniak’s Lounge, the bowling alley where the retirement party scene was filmed in the movie Backdraft.
