Obama Library Already Having an Economic Impact on South Side?

It appears the Barack Obama Presidential Center is already having an economic impact on Chicago’s South Side.  Or at least on the neighboring University of Chicago.

DNAInfo Chicago reports on a community meeting where plans were unveiled to build a new hotel to serve the academics, scholars, and others expected to visit the area specifically to do research at the presidential library.  It is being developed by New York’s Hospitality 3, which also operates similar campus hotels at other universities under the The Study brand.  Although the hotel will be on the University of Chicago campus, it will not be owned by the institution.

According to the U of C, the hotel bearing the full name The Study at the University of Chicago will have 180 rooms in 15 stories, and be about 190 feet tall.  It will be located at the corner of 60th and Dorchester.  It will include meeting facilities, and a full service restaurant.

The plan is a score for cynics who criticized the location of the Obama library for being not only on park land, but for being isolated from neighborhoods in need of an economic boost, like Bronzeville, where vacant land exists in abundance.
